About Jordan Valley Barn

History of the Barn

A sea captain named Oscar Blair bought the land now called Jordan Valley Barn in 1887. He built the barn and guesthouse at that time, and his farm went down in East Jordan history as a local showpiece because of its structure and beauty. The barn was first used as a dairy operation, and then converted into a vegetable farm, which supplied fresh produce for the northern Michigan area.

The Scheers purchased the 13 acres property in 2012, the house was considered a “tear down”; the barn, which was still solid with its old-world construction, needed a lot of clean out and repair. After discovering hard wood floors under layers of paint, linoleum and carpet, and solid 6 inch “2x4s” under the paneling, wallpaper, and lath & plaster walls, they made the decision to construct a new roof in place of the collapsed one, and lovingly restore, rather than demolish, the house. The Scheers began that two-year project at the same time that they restored the barn to its original grandeur, with a new roof and floors.

Eventually, the barn was commissioned as the Jordan Valley Barn wedding venue, and has had a full calendar ever since its beginning. Seeing what a convenience it would be for the family to be on-site during the wedding weekend, the house was turned into a guesthouse after the first wedding season. The venue is the pride of East Jordan, and has been awarded the Renaissance Award for the most beautiful improvement of a local property.
